The last few days have been delightful with the sun shining, taking the temperature right up to record highs near the 70’s. The winter white has almost disappeared. Even the rivers are flowing with large ice sections. Some went out to the golf courses! We thank God for his gifts.
These last days have seen lots of traveling for me. I went to the funeral for Charles Berner from Council Bluffs 2/10. He was the father of Fr. Michael Berner from our diocese. Bishop Pates rode with me and we had time to talk about the progress of St. Luke’s. The Bishop shared about his experience beginning a new parish in Minneapolis some years ago. It was good to get is encouragement.
On this last Tuesday I went to Vern Stessman’s wake at Mary Our Queen church in Omaha. Vern is the youngest brother of Fr. Jerry Stessman one of our retired priests. This last Thursday I joined about 30 of our priests at the Creighton Retreat House in Griswold for our Institute of Good Leaders, Good Shepherds. It is a two year leadership training process. That was the really warm and sunny day.
This last Wednesday evening there was another gathering of new St. Luke’s Parishioners in the OLIH rectory basement. It was great to talk about progress so far. We have received the gift of a desktop computer for our finances courtesy of Simonson and Associates. We appreciate their generosity. Two of our parishioners received training about the Diocesan Financial program and its use on Friday.
Plans for a St. Luke’s Parish gathering were set for Sunday March 6, 3 – 5 pm at the Otter Creek Golf Clubhouse. Mark your calendars and plan on coming to meet St. Luke’s parishioners and to hear about what has happened so far. Mark your calendars as well for our First Sunday Mass – March 13, 9:00 am at Ashland Ridge Elementary School Gym 2600 N.W. Ash Drive. With this First Sunday of Lent Mass, St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church will begin its journey of faith. Keep us all in prayer as we take these first steps.
Soon we will have an opportunity to use our “New Member Survey” to volunteer for things that each one can do as we begin life at St. Luke’s. You will be able to find that survey on our web site, fill it out and return it to the parish. Many ways to be involved in our parish life are about to begin. Join the action!
Fr. Steve had two funerals this last Friday and I had one on Saturday and will have another on Monday. We are reminded of our mortality and how we need to pray for those who have died and for their families who remain with us.
If you have not yet registered in St. Luke’s, I encourage you to do so. Liturgical ministries are being planned for our masses. Song books are being ordered. New vestments and a Sunday Lectionary have arrived. Come and join us!
