Father Larry's Letters

"Father Larry's Letters" are a weekly letter/journal about the many events occurring within and around the St. Luke's community.

Spring in Iowa

Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,

As I write this letter, the sun is shining. It is 70 degrees outside. Green is bursting all over. The grass, buds in trees, early flowers all think that no snow will come this weekend! I hope they are all right! Spring in Iowa!

For this last Saturday’s Liturgical Ministers meeting, I was able to use the booklet that Fr. Dan Kirby developed for his parishes in Council Bluffs and adjust it for St. Luke’s. I hope that we will be able to put it on the web site for all our Liturgical Ministers. Take a look as you read this letter. After that meeting, the Liturgy Committee met for the first time. It is great to have a good number begin to help develop our liturgical celebrations.

We had a great celebration for my Installation as pastor of St. Luke’s by Bishop Pates. I think he likes the idea of new parishes starting. It brings back lots of good memories when he was the founding pastor of St. Ambrose in the Minneapolis area. I appreciate his encouraging words for us as a new parish and for me as new pastor. It was a great celebration with the 4th Degree Knights, with wonderful music, good hospitality and a joyous atmosphere. Special thanks to all who helped make this celebration a joyful and fond memory. Way to go St. Luke’s. Thank you for your best wishes and prayers as well.

Keep our young people about to be Confirmed and those about to make their 1st Eucharist in your prayers. These are pivotal moments in their life of faith. May the Holy Spirit surround them with his inspiration and love.

Holy Week begins with our celebration of Palm Sunday this Sunday. Do remember the extra time for Reconciliation on Tuesday 4/19 6:30 – 8:00 pm. At the same time, plan on taking part in the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday 4/21, 7:00 pm at Ashland Ridge and the Good Friday Service on Friday 4/22, 7:00 pm again at Ashland Ridge. Gather with your families at our Easter Sunday masses on 4/24, 9:00 am and 11:00 am.

The sunshine keeps inviting me to get my bicycle out and to take advantage of the vitamin D. I hope I can respond to that call. May all of you be blessed as we begin Holy Week.

Peace,
Fr. Larry Hoffmann
