Father Larry's Letters

"Father Larry's Letters" are a weekly letter/journal about the many events occurring within and around the St. Luke's community.

There Will Be Green Things Growing!

Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,

This has been a very full week. I look out my window at my office at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church and see that the grass is turning green. It is a sure sign of spring with new life at hand. As we are well into the weeks of Lent, Holy Week will soon be here and then the celebration of Easter. The New Life of Jesus with resurrection will be at hand as well. We rejoice in God’s gift of life.

On Wednesday 3/30, I attended my first Ankeny Ministerial Association meeting. It was held at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church where our parish offices are and so it was just down the hall for lunch and meeting. It is great to get to know some of the area ministers. That evening we held our Organizing Committee meeting and reviewed many of the activities of the last couple of weeks. We reviewed our financial activity for the period, the Sunday money counting and banking, the wonderful work done to create storage lockers at Ashland Ridge, the development of the music ministry, the fine tuning of our sound system and arrangements for coffee and rolls.

We also finalized our Lease for the office space at St. Anne’s. Liturgical ministers will have met this Saturday 4/9 for a review of their ministries. Arrangements are being made for the Liturgy Committee to meet, to begin their work including plans for Holy Week and Easter. The Stewardship committee is planning a first meeting on 4/17.

We will be having Holy Week services at Ashland Ridge on Holy Thursday 4/21 at 7:00 pm and on Good Friday 4.22 at 7:00 pm. All are encouraged to attend. Easter Sunday masses will be at 9:00 am and at 11:00 am on 4/24. Bring your out of town guests to celebrate with you and your family.

Thank you to all who will have attended my Installation as pastor of St. Luke’s by Bishop Pates at our Sunday mass. It is great to have the Bishop with us and to formally begin the process of forming the community of faith that is St. Luke the Evangelist parish.

If you are wondering about Vacation Bible School at OLIH, you are encouraged to have your children be part of that summer experience. We are not yet in a position to have our own program. We do have between 50 – 60 students from St. Luke’s families in our K – 8 classes. We are growing quickly with 97 registered families.

We will not have 5:30 pm mass this Thursday because of the Chrism Mass at St. Ambrose Cathedral at 7:00 pm that evening. You are encouraged to attend this experience of the Diocesan Church as the Oils for the coming year are blessed. The priests will have a chance to be at a Day of Reflection that afternoon leading up to the mass.

I will have an extra time to celebrate Reconciliation (Confession) on Tuesday of Holy Week 4/19 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm at St. Anne’s. It is good to celebrate this sacrament as part of our Lenten preparation for this special week. See you this weekend.

Peace, Fr. Larry
