Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
On my over and back from Panama, Iowa, my home town last weekend, I notice many fields already harvested and some even tilled for next spring. Many fields were still green. Others were ready for harvest. There is great variety in the quality of each field. May the Lord bless all who depend on the harvest.
Tuesday, September 4, early evening, I attended a “Project Iowa” graduation for 36 unemployed and under employed people who had completed a training session either at DMACC or Mercy College. This training was initiated by AMOS, A Mid-Iowa Organizing Strategy involving 28 different area churches. Those completing the training were assured of good paying jobs like at Vermeer and Mercy Hospital with benefits. Bishop Pates had the opening prayer. It was a great witness of how people working together can enable folks to have good jobs and provide for their families.
Later that evening, we had a meeting to discuss the October 14th 2nd Annual Feast of St. Luke and Dinner to be held from 4-7:00 pm at OLIH. We will have a Pasta dinner with silent auction. We need lots of folks to gather needed supplies, provide desserts, set up, prepare and serve the dinner, conduct the advance ticket sales, bus the tables, run the silent auction and clean up! Please consider signing up after the masses this weekend. It will be great fun working together to help celebrate our Patron Saint’s feast day.
On Wednesday afternoon, I gathered with the priests of Des Moines for our regular Regional meeting at St. Theresa’s. The Strategic Planning Team met that evening to review the August 25 Workshop and to plan for the next meeting with the Architects. After that meeting, I joined Cindy Clefisch and Religious Education parents talking about the classes that will begin Wednesday, September 12, at St. Anne’s.
Thursday evening, the RE parents had another opportunity to review the upcoming classes. At the same time, the Liturgy Committee met for their regular meeting. We reviewed the upcoming server training, Hospitality Ministry guidelines, our initial plans for an October 14th Celebration of St. Luke and a review of the Stewardship of Prayer to be held September 15-16.
Saturday evening at the 4:30 pm Mass, we celebrated the Rite of Welcoming for Gene Larson who is in the RCIA for St. Luke’s. Welcome Gene! Following that Mass and the Sunday Mass, new altar server training was held. Thank you for those 4th grade and older who are willing to begin serving. Others are still welcome to begin as well. Just let me know and we can arrange training for you.
Sunday afternoon, the regular Stewardship Committee meeting was held at St. Anne’s. We continue to discuss the Annual Stewardship of Prayer, of Faith and our plans for Stewardship of Treasure that will be held September, October and November.
We had a good turnout for pictures after our masses this weekend. We will have pictures this weekend and next as well. I ask that everyone take a moment to have your family picture taken. No one will be trying to sell you pictures. It is just for our informal St. Luke’s directory.
