Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
God has a pretty good sense of humor with those of us who like to pay attention to the weather. Just when it began to look like a hot, dry and dangerous time for Iowa crops, there was a nice saving shower, the hot turned to record lows at night and cool days. Thank you Lord for all your blessings whenever and however they come.
After our Parish Picnic last Sunday, I was host to Fr. Savino during the week at the Rectory and the parish office. I enjoyed having him concelebrate our weekday Masses. He came to some of our gatherings as well as working to complete a book he is writing. I will be interested to see it in print.
Last Sunday evening, I met with the Chidester family to help plan the funeral for Karen, a former parishioner from St. Anthony’s. That funeral took place at Hamilton’s Southtown on Wednesday morning. Please keep Karen in your prayers.
Tuesday evening, July 23, the St. Luke’s School committee met. We discussed a letter from St. Luke’s to all those who had indicated interest in St. Luke’s School to come to information meetings that will be held August 17-18 at St. Luke’s and August 24-25 at OLIH. The agenda for those meetings and the needed materials were reviewed. The reality of St. Luke’s School draws closer. We hope to hire a principal to begin August 2014. To do that, we need to advertise beginning February 2014. That is not too far away!
Wednesday evening, Fr. Savino and I enjoyed supper with Travis and Katie Funseth. Fr. Savino showed us several uTube videos about Ghana.
Thursday, I enjoyed a beautiful day at Echo Valley Golf Course for the Christ the King Parish golf outing. I was amazed that I had more straight drives than I can ever remember in one round of golf. That evening, the architects and the Strategic Planning Team hosted a neighborhood gathering for those whose property adjoins on our south. Sub sandwiches and homemade ice cream were served as the 1st Phase and Master Plans for St. Luke’s were presented.
Sharing this information will help us with the re-zoning we need to do for our future Senior Housing.
On Friday, I went to Corpus Christi parish in Council Bluffs with my priests’ support group. It is wonderful to be able to share “facts” of what is happening in our life as priests and to be encouraged as well as receiving prayer. At the same time, Fr. Savino was taken to St. John’s in Adel to present the needs of his parishes in Ghana. May he be blessed as he continues his missionary work.
Mark your calendars for our days of Pilgrimage September 4-8th. We will have prayer events each day. More information later. That Sunday will include Bishop Pates celebrating Mass with us at 9:00 am. After Mass, all will be invited to our St. Luke’s building site for prayers to conclude our days of Pilgrimage and for our St. Luke’s Ground Breaking ceremony and prayer. More details later.
Please take a moment to pray to the Holy Spirit to discern if you could help as a catechist for our expanding Religious Education program. With more students, we need more catechists. Contact Cindy after your prayer.
Our announcements last week said to bring school backpacks this weekend for blessing. We meant to bring them August 10 –11. Whenever you bring them, I will bless them. May the Lord’s blessing come to all students and families preparing for this coming school year.
