Almost Rain - Real Parish Life

Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,

As I write this letter today, I noticed that during the night one or two tenths of rain had fallen. There are clouds up there - maybe later today some more rain will come down!

This last Sunday evening, September 8, after Mass and the Ground Breaking with Bishop Pates, we held our monthly Stewardship Committee meeting. We studied from Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic by Matthew Kelly on prayer. We made final plans for the Ministry Fair for September14-15.

Monday, September 9, I was out on my bicycle before it became so very hot. Even so, it can be pretty draining which meant some relaxing the rest of my day off.

On Tuesday, September 10, I went to Boystown in Omaha for their annual Priests Appreciation Dinner. I arrived in the city about 4:45 pm and it started raining. The rain continued until almost 5:20 pm at dinner time. Afterwards, there was still a light rain. Going home, the lightening and heavy clouds seemed to always be ahead of me until almost back to Ankeny and then they went North.

Wednesday morning, I attended the meeting with the Neumann-Monson/BVH architects. At that meeting, we further detailed the proposed exterior of the 1st Phase, especially the front of the parish hall that will be used for worship. After that meeting, I made it to the conclusion of the St. Joseph Education Center Board meeting. The Board reviewed the work that Center Director Matt Halbach had been doing during this summer period. We made recommendations about his proposed programming for the fall season. Check out the Center web site (sjeciowa.org) for more information about all that is being offered through the Center.

Thursday, September 12 morning, I met with Sr. Susan from OLIH to discuss RCIA progress. Two St. Luke’s candidates will begin dismissal for the breaking of the Word at our 4:30 pm Masses anticipating their reception into the Catholic Church October 31.

That evening, the St. Luke’s Parish Pastoral Council had its monthly meeting. We reviewed the work of the Recruitment and Welcome Team. R and W Team Members are choosing to renew their work for the coming year. Plans for welcoming newcomers on September 28 were shared. Strategic Planning Team update was given with the sharing of two parish hall elevations. The council realized the timeline needed to establish a St. Luke’s School Board was at hand. Sample Constitution and By Laws will be gathered. Steps to have membership on our board by the end of November 2013 will be detailed for a special meeting of the Council on September 25.

On Friday, I was host for my Jesus Caritas Priests’ Support group at the Rectory. We enjoyed lunch at Olive Garden and shared facts from our lives during the last month.

Saturday and Sunday after Masses, we had our Ministry Fair. Saturday’s crowd was light because of the ISU/Iowa game going on at the same time. Sunday was well attended with many ministries and parish activities having a chance to share about their particular work.

Please be generous in our second collection for Seminarians this weekend. You can use the Bishop’s letter or respond on line if you forgot your gift at Mass today. May you and your family be blessed these Fall Days.

Peace,
Fr. Larry Hoffmann
