"Father Larry's Letters" are a weekly letter/journal about the many events occurring within and around the St. Luke's community.

Retreats, Campaigns and Picnics

Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,

Saturday morning, June 7, I drove by the St. Luke’s building site and saw that a crew was removing foundation forms. It was but a couple of hours later that the rains came!

Sunday, June 1, I made my way down to the Annual Priests’ retreat at Conception Abbey, in Conception, Missouri. We had Fr. Sean McKnight as our retreat master. He was very good in sharing insights into Diocesan Priests’ spirituality - how best to grow in the spirit while keeping going with pastoral ministry in the parishes where we are assigned. We enjoyed the evening socials as well, telling lots of stories from our earlier days as priests.

After the retreat, I went down to Sunrise Beach, Missouri on the Lake of the Ozarks. A good friend from my assignment at Queen of Apostles in Council Bluffs had died. He and his wife Janet had retired to their home there. It was good to be with his family as they mourned his death and celebrated his life now with the Lord.

Last weekend, we celebrated the Birthday of the Church at Pentecost with lots of red! It was also a great time to celebrate baptisms - Daxton Marcus Stone was baptized at our Sunday Mass. Devin Lee and Caitlin Mae Vonnahme were baptized after Mass. Welcome to our newest members of the St. Luke’s faith community.

Last Sunday was the 1st Anniversary of our “Together We Build” capital campaign for our St. Luke’s facilities. I want to thank all 170+ parish families who pledged $1,540,000 to our campaign. Your gifts were most generous. I encourage you to continue your faithful fulfillment of your pledges. I want to thank Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart parish for their generous pledge of $250,000 to our campaign. They have already sent significant parts of that pledge for our building fund. Don and Charlene Lamberti have almost finished their pledge of $2,000,000 for St. Luke’s Catholic School. All of these have meant important steps to meeting the long range cost of our $8,000,000 1st Phase project.

On this anniversary of our “Together We Build” campaign, we planned on having those who are new to St. Luke’s since last June take part in this financial support of our project. Pledges made last June were for 5 years. I ask that those who are new to the parish consider making pledges and gifts for 4 years. We have planned on your support to finish the $500,000 needed to complete the overall support for this phase. During the month of June, you will receive a letter from me noting that someone from our Capital Campaign committee will be contacting you about how you can support this “Together We Build” effort. Please welcome them and visit about how you may be able to participate. The forty or so new families making a significant commitment can go a long way in meeting our needs for this campaign.

Some were not able to make a pledge last year. Some made a one-time gift. I ask you to consider how you can support this effort at this time as well. Everyone doing what we can will enable God’s plan for St. Luke’s to unfold.

I am looking forward to our Parish Picnic next weekend at Big Creek shelter # 1. Please sign up for the food to share with St. Luke’s supplying the burgers, hot dogs, condiments and buns. It should be great fun.

On this Father’s Day, take a moment to pray for your father. Thank God for the gift of life that came from them. Thank God for the ways you have been blessed through them. May God touch them with His love.

Peace,
Fr. Larry Hoffman
