Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
Last Sunday 8/2, I joined the St. Luke’s Primetimers out at the Snus Hill Winery between Slater and Madrid for an afternoon under the trees with live music and nice wine. It was a great afternoon. I recommend it to you. That evening, I met with a family from St. Anthony’s to plan the funeral for Paul Willard. That parish was in need of a priest to help and I was glad to do so.
On Monday, 8/3, I went out to Panama and met with my brother and sister for lunch. After lunch, we were at my mother’s house, trying to get some estate things settled. We went to the bank to get more forms and steps taken to move the process forward. We are getting Mom’s house ready for sale.
Tuesday 8/4, I celebrated the funeral for Paul Willard at St. Anthony’s. He enjoyed being at daily mass since his retirement some years before. His prayer was a central part of his ongoing battle with cancer. In the evening, members of the Parish Pastoral Council met with prospective members for an evening of information and discernment about membership on the council. Keep them all in your prayers for insight into God’s plan for them.
On Wednesday 8/5, I met with John Huynh, director of the Faith Journey, and Tonya Eaton our Principal. Faith Journey is a process for Catholic School teachers and administrators to help them in their own faith formation. Receiving this help to grow in their own faith will help them be able to share the faith that is alive within them. We had our staff meeting later that morning. I then concelebrated the Mass at St. Ambrose with the Serra Club, the Bishop and the Seminarians from our diocese. A nice lunch followed. That evening, I met with two different couples preparing for marriage.
Thursday I joined several area priests for our “Pastor’s Lunch at the Merle Hay Mall. It is great to hear what others are doing and to share what we are doing.
On Friday, I celebrated 1st Friday mass with the residents and guests at Vintage Hills. It was a good day to get caught up on some of the time at the desk. In mid-afternoon, Fr. Steve Orr came over to have a wedding rehearsal of a couple from OLIH. They tried to have two weddings there on the same day and it was easier to have the Saturday morning wedding here and so they did. It was very nice.
Saturday evening, Fr. Bill Joensen, brother of Tom Joensen, celebrated the 4:30 pm mass. He was gathering with their family for a reunion of sorts and it was nice to have someone lead the parish in celebrating the Mass. Thanks Fr. Bill. The Social Concerns Team helped prepare lunch for Habitat for Humanity workers for that day in our kitchen. Later that day, the Knights of Columbus moved and washed many, many dishes, cups, glasses with our new dish washer. They are now in storage ready for meals that we might serve.
Sunday 8/9, the St. Luke’s Knights of Columbus supplied the Liturgical Ministries for the 9:00 am mass. I appreciate all that the Knights do for St. Luke’s. Following the mass, a 1st degree for new members was held. Welcome to our new Knights!
On Friday, the last lift for putting siding on our facilities was hauled away. There are some punch list things still being attended to but the construction end of things seems to be finished. We praise God and thank Him for all the work that many, many workers and volunteers have accomplished here at St. Luke’s.
St. Luke’s opening day of Catholic School is drawing closer - August 26. There is still time for any still considering enrolling their children in our K-3rd Grade classes. I encourage you to take advantage of the very significant Tuition Assistance that is available. Be blessed in these remaining summer days.
Fr. Larry Hoffmann
