Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
One day this week I came to the parish and in the east was an opening in the clouds. The pink-orange array shining through highlighted one of the “sun dogs” so that it looked like a huge pillar coming to the earth! It was awesome - a light display like I have never seen before. Iowa in January…
Monday 1/18, Dr. Matt Halbach from the St. Joseph’s Education Center came to St. Luke’s Church for a presentation on “Building a Church of Mercy.” A good number enjoyed his sharing of what Mercy means and how we can be instruments of mercy in our own lives. Good cookies afterward!
Tuesday 1/19 after the morning adult class in the Narthex, the staff enjoyed a Manicotti Dinner courtesy of Margaret Zacharias. Thanks Margaret. That evening, the RCIA session discussed The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. It was good to review that this sacrament is for anyone in serious sickness and not just for the last moments of life.
Wednesday, I had a chance to share about the sacrament of Holy Orders with the 5th Grade Religious Education class. Deacon Dan McGuire also shared his experience of that sacrament. That evening, the
Facilities Committee met for its regular meeting. We looked at a safety review of our buildings and discovered several things that could be resolved by the committee members. They set about covering some of them the next day. It was a very good meeting.
Thursday after the 5:30 pm mass, the Faith Formation Council held its regular meeting. Plans for Lenten Jubilee of Mercy study groups were made. We heard a report about “Alpha for Catholics” and looked at trying to schedule this 10 week program after Easter. More to come about this Parish faith experience,
Following this council meeting, the Finance Council held its regular meeting. Plans for developing the budget for next year were discussed. We anticipate working with the Cuneen Company for a letter and announcement effort to have people become more regular with their financial support of St. Luke’s. We will also be purchasing a few more round and long tables so we do not have to move them so often.
Friday after the 8:30 am mass, I joined Catholic School administrators and parish teams for a workshop on School Enrollment held at Christ the King. It was a good day looking at all that can be done to let folks know about the good things happening and that can happen at our Catholic School.
Saturday I enjoyed baptizing Harper Marie Madison and Eivin L. Niewoehner at the 4:30 pm mass. What fun to hold two new members of St. Luke’s at the same time! Congratulations! Following the mass and baptisms, I went to OLIH to be one of the judges for Little Learners fundraising “Trivia Night.” It is a great fun annual event helping their pre-school.
Sunday St. Luke’s School held an open house. It was a great time for parents and prospective students to come and see our wonderful school and facilities. Welcome to all!
I will have been at the Christian Experience Weekend with the men of the area at OLIH since last Friday evening. Keep all the participants and team in your prayers that we can continue to grow in our faith.
I will be leaving for skiing vacation this Friday 2/5 until Thursday evening 2/11. Pray that we keep safe!
