Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
With these October days, the fall colors are beginning to make their appearance. On Thursday after dark, the soy beans on our property were harvested. They were out with the combines running with their lights on and getting our work done for us. The harvest is at hand.
Sunday evening 9/25, we enjoyed the S’Mores party in the west parking at Church. I suspect over 100 parents, children and parishioners enjoyed the evening and all the Marshmallows and chocolate seemed to disappear. It was a great evening.
Monday afternoon, I visited my eye doctor for my annual checkup. No change. That evening, the Knights of Columbus held their regular meeting. Lots of plans for upcoming projects were discussed as well as welcoming a new member after the 1st degree ceremony.
Tuesday morning after our study group, I met with Chris McCarville from the Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa. He was out meeting pastors in his new role as Executive Director of this foundation. He will share with us the last weekend in October about how individuals can take advantage of this foundation. That afternoon, I visited the 1st grade at St. Luke’s School. The RCIA held their session that evening and then I attended the conclusion of the St. Luke’s School Board meeting.
On Wednesday 9/28, I had my annual visit to the Dermatologist. He always finds something to take care of. At 5:30 pm that evening, I held a Mass server training for about 12 fourth graders. It is great to have more young people helping out. At the evening RE class, I celebrated the Anointing of the Sick for one of our students who will be in the hospital soon. It is good to let our young people know about this special sacrament.
Thursday 9/29, I met with Kim Lehman from Iowa Catholic Radio. She invited St. Luke’s to take part in the “Encounter Jesus” program by listening once a day to Iowa Catholic Radio for a week. Our week will be after the 1st of the new year. More information later.
St. Luke’s hosted the luncheon meeting of the Ankeny Ministerial Association at 11:30 Thursday. Thank you to Camha, our School Lunch Nutrition person, for sharing the school lunch with us. After the mass and adoration, I met with a couple to complete their marriage papers and to plan their November wedding.
Friday morning I met with the St. Luke’s School 4th graders to train them to be Mass servers. They will begin helping with Friday and weekend masses soon. I then joined my priest’s support group at Christ the King rectory for our monthly meeting. I appreciate their support and prayers. Later that afternoon, I met with another couple to begin their marriage preparation for their wedding back home in Minnesota next year.
Saturday I enjoyed a gathering at Gary and Jane Glenn’s after mass for a Pit Fire outdoor gathering. It was a beautiful evening with good roasted hot dogs and S’Mores plus other good food. Thanks Gary and Jane.
Sunday we had our 1st 8:30 and 10:30 masses at St. Luke’s. We baptized Mila Kay Marie Harbert, daughter of Chris and Tori at the 8:30 am mass. Welcome Mila! There was a nice crowd at the 10:30 mass as well. More
volunteers for the ministries would be appreciated but good participation and attendance. Then I was off to Iowa City for the Annual Priests’ workshop.
