"Father Larry's Letters" are a weekly letter/journal about the many events occurring within and around the St. Luke's community.

New Beginnings - Councils and RE Sessions

Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,

Last week, I asked you to mark your calendars for the 10 week “Alpha” program that would have begun October 9th. The Faith Formation Council looked at the 10 week calendar from that date and discovered many serious Sunday evening conflicts including our 10/16 St. Luke’s Feast Day Pasta Dinner, Thanksgiving and others. For these reasons and others, the “Alpha” for St. Luke’s has been rescheduled beginning January 8th. More information about this growing in our faith series later.

On Sunday 9/11, I enjoyed being with the folks at the KC Golf dinner prepared by our Knights in the Gym. Monday 9/12, I attended the OLIH Knights of Columbus dinner and regular meeting. They have developed a scholarship program to help with “Guardian Angel” tuition support for students at St. Luke’s School. Thank you to the OLIH Knights!

Tuesday 9/13 after mass, the Tuesday Morning Study group began the Study of “Prayer: Our Deepest Longing” by Fr. Ronald Rohleiser. It is a short but excellent study of prayer. We are enjoying this study. The Faith Formation Council hopes to have this book available for other parish Adult Faith study in October. Be looking for times to sign up for this very valuable study and read.

Last Tuesday morning, I enjoyed answering the 3rd Grade St. Luke’s class questions. They had some challenging things they were concerned about. I spent some time later getting flight tickets to Tucson after Christmas for our family gathering. It took a while, but it is finally set. That afternoon, I visited with a couple beginning plans for their wedding next October. The 2nd RCIA session began at 6:30 pm with a lively discussion about the existence of God. Next week, we will look at the “Pathways of Prayer.”

Wednesday 9/14 was the first evening for our Religious Education classes. I enjoyed helping with a prayer at the end of each session focused on “The Triumph of the Cross” the feast for the day. We blessed the class crosses that had been brought to church in procession. It was a great beginning for the 240+ students in our Wednesday evening sessions for this year.

Thursday, I met with Randy Schnell, our Pictorial Directory representative from Lifetouch. We have our materials sent into the company so that they can put together the proof book. If all goes well, we will have the directories available soon. That evening, the Faith Formation Council held its regular meeting and discussed “Alpha” as I mentioned above. We also discussed having Dr. Matt Halbach return for another Talk about Mercy. He will be here on Monday, November 28 at 6:30 pm in the Church. Many enjoyed his talk last year and since then he has written a book called “Becoming a Parish of Mercy.” More to come.

The Finance Council met later that evening. We welcomed two potential new members Jim Roths and Craig Oberreuter. The annual report to the diocese was signed by the members. Ryan Schon accepted the chair for the Council with thanks to Mike Fitzpatrick for 2+ years of leadership.

The St. Luke’s “Primetimers” met for their annual business meeting in the Gym after the Saturday 4:30 pm mass. Sunday we welcomed Titus Ryan Cogdill and Isaac Thomas Curran to St. Luke’s at their Sunday 9/18 baptism. Welcome Titus and Isaac!

Peace,
Fr. Larry Hoffmann
