Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
As I wrote this letter a week ago, there were little piles of snow on the edges of parking lots. Winter is at hand and our bodies are beginning to adapt to the cold. Change is at hand.
Change in our hearts during this last week of Advent is also at hand. Don’t worry about what you have not done in Advent. Decide to prepare your heart each day this week for the coming of Jesus at Christmas. Call someone you know is lonely. Send a card to someone you just met.
Reflect on the daily readings and share the Christmas Mass at Midnight readings with your family before Mass. That set of readings will be used for both our Masses of Christmas. There are daily ways of building our sense of anticipation as we watch and wait for the Lord to come.
Monday of this last week was my time to get most of my Christmas Shopping done. It is fun to look for and find things for my nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Tuesday, I met with area priests and pastors for lunch and conversation about the happenings in our parishes.
Wednesday evening, the Organizing Committee met. We reviewed the progress of our finances, our liturgy, our efforts at inviting new members and the beginning of our Strategic Planning Team.
Thursday, we celebrated the Immaculate Conception with Masses at 7:45 am and 5:30 pm at St. Anne’s. The Chamber of Commerce met at OLIH for their Christmas lunch and musical program featuring musicians from Faith Baptist College and the Ankeny Community Chorus. It was a great lunch and program. Sunday, December 11, I met with the Confirmation Class and we held our Stewardship Committee meeting.
Soon, St. Luke’s will begin our Parish Pastoral Council. It will take over the wonderful work that our Organizing Committee of volunteers has served in this last year. If you would be interested in information about membership on this Council, please let me know. It will serve as our leadership who will pursue the steps in our direction as a faith community.
The Strategic Planning Team has had its first two meetings. They are taking time to put together a Charter Document that will detail their purpose, values, and goals and how they will operate. Their major responsibility is to develop the Master Plan for our parish facilities on Weigel Drive. They will be seeking lots of input from all of you and will make regular reports of their progress.
Mark your calendars! St. Luke’s parish will be the host parish for KWKY 1150 AM radio the week of January 2 - 7. Daily spots and interviews of St. Luke’s parishioners will be featured. If your business would like to sponsor any of this radio time, please call 223-1150 or let me know. Have a blessed last week of Advent.
