Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
This week has been filled with blessings and many activities. Last Wednesday I attended the Ankeny Ministerial Association meeting at the Resurrection Lutheran Church. We heard from the need to give healthy food even in our gifts to the Food Pantry to help those in need to maintain their health. I enjoyed several Knights and parishioners meeting that evening to help plan my 40th Anniversary of Ordination open house on May 29. Then several met to do some more planning to begin SCRIP fund raising for St. Luke’s. Still later, the Organizing Committee met and reviewed the many projects and needs of our growing faith community.
Early on Thursday I joined two parishioners going to Atlantic for a workshop on the New Roman Missal. The speakers led us in understanding more about why the wording would be different and showed us what that would be and how it would sound in a regular mass. That evening I came back to celebrate Confirmation at OLIH led by Bishop Pates and concelebrate with Fr. Steve. Please keep our 5 St. Luke’s young people who were confirmed in your prayers.
Friday after the 7:45 am mass, the priests gathered at St. Boniface in Waukee for our workshop on the priests’ part of the New Roman Missal changes. There is a different set of translations for the opening prayers, the prayers at the preparation of gifts and after communion. The Eucharistic prayer translations are changed some as well. We were led in how to chant the different parts of the mass with a couple of different melodies. I will see if I can begin to master some of this chanting.
Saturday evening I had a chance to attend several 1st Eucharist family gatherings. Ten of our St. Luke’s parishioners made their 1st Eucharist last weekend along with their OLIH classmates. It is a wonderful time to celebrate and to know Jesus with us through bread and wine now his body and blood. Keep our young people in your prayers as they experience Jesus within their heart in this new and special way.
Sunday saw the baptism of Michael Jacob, son of Austin and Molly Yarolim. We welcome this newest member of St. Luke’s parish. May he grow in the faith he received through the cleansing waters of baptism. On Monday, I joined fellow priests at Fr. Tom DeCarlo’s golf outing at Legacy in Norwalk. I was with Fr. Ed Pfeffer and Bishop Pates. I managed to hit a few good shots – enough to go out again someday.
This week was very full. May your coming week be filled with the joy and Alleluias at the resurrection of Jesus. May we experience the sun and may farmers and gardeners have opportunities to plan.
Have a blessed Easter Season week!
Fr. Larry Hoffmann
