Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
Well, it is not summertime—but it is feeling like it with the warm weather and sunshine. Kids are out of school. The grass is growing faster than you can get it cut. Real summer is just a couple of weeks away. And don’t forget the 1st Annual St. Luke’s Parish Picnic Sunday June 12, Noon—3:00 pm at north Creek Park. It is a great time to meet people, have some great food and to enjoy this easy summertime living.
Thank you to all of you who helped with and attended my 40th Anniversary of Ordination Open House last Sunday at OLIH. It was a great gathering of family and folks from the many assignments of these last 40 years. I really do appreciate all the help from St. Luke’s Parishioners and the K.C.’s who helped prepare and serve at the reception. My mother, nine brothers and sisters, their spouses and families came to join in the celebration. We went out to see the St. Luke property and they were impressed with the potential of that property.
Then we went to dinner, enjoyed playing games and sharing memories at OLIH rectory. After Memorial Day mass on Monday, we went to brunch at the Ankeny Diner. It was a great time to recall so many graced moments over these years.
Tuesday meant that I had to go back to work. I spent the better part of the day catching up on the email, the voice mail and the regular mail. On Wednesday evening the liturgy committee met to review and to plan for the coming week’s liturgies. After the meeting, we attended the presentation by Kyle Lechtenberg from the Diocesan Liturgy Office about the New Roman Missal. It was well attended and helpful.
Thursday evening we had our Organizing Committee meeting at our St. Anne’s meeting room. Norm Bormann from the Diocesan Building Commission came and presented the Building Commission process for new buildings in the diocese. He was very helpful in giving a sense of the steps we will need to take in the future. We shared the information packets from a number of architects and contractors. It was exciting to begin to dream about some possibilities for St. Luke’s Church, School and Senior Housing. We talked as well about trips to visit new churches and schools.
On Friday, I went to Griswold for the next day of the Good Leaders, Good Shepherds Institute. We focused on problem solving and conflict resolution. That evening, I attended the Ordination of Deacon Guthrie Dolan to the priesthood. It was great to see his excitement and joy as family, friends and the diocesan church surrounded him at this special moment.
After Saturday Reconciliation, I finished my homily. Then I attended a teacher retirement party and went to Fr. Mike Hess’ 40th Anniversary Celebration at Sacred Heart in West Des Moines.
Pentecost is this coming Sunday. It is a great time to pray for the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit for all at St. Luke’s. We know it is the way Jesus will be with us always.
