Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
After such extreme heat in July and early August, it is kind of shocking to be looking for sweaters this Sunday, August 12, as I write this letter. This is not a complaint, especially as a little shower goes along with it once in a while. We thank God for the blessings of rain and cooler weather.
Saturday, August 4, I had the joy of presiding at the wedding of Danielle Varnum and Sean Neugent, both St. Luke’s parishioners. Congratulations Danielle and Sean and welcome to St. Luke’s.
Sunday at lunch time, I went to Charlie and Buffy Hart’s with Fr. Steve and Deacon Ross Parker. Charlie and Buffy are Deacon Ross’ aunt and uncle and they hosted us along with family for Deacon Ross’ last day at OLIH.
Monday I found my way to St. John’s in Greenfield to play cards on my day off with priests from Shelby County. While I was the score keeper, I could not get a win! On Tuesday, I had lunch with area Catholic Pastors at Talley’s in Beaverdale. We try to stay in touch about parish events and happenings.
That evening, the Social Concerns Team had its first meeting. The members were given my “Sponsorship Document” that described what I would like them to do on this Team. They are in the process of drawing up a “Charter Document” to respond to my letter describing how the team will operate. They will then study Catholic Teaching on social concerns and begin to develop the projects and tasks that St. Luke’s will undertake.
On Wednesday, the Recruitment-Welcome Team met for the second time. They began to put together their “Charter Document” for team operation. They discussed how to develop strategies to invite new members and ways to welcome those recently signed up in the parish. They want to focus on how all members of St. Luke’s can and should invite people they know to consider being part of our parish.
On Thursday, met for the quarterly St. Joseph’s Education Center Board meeting. This was the first meeting with the new SJEC director, Matt Halbach. Matt and his family are living in Ankeny near OLIH. Many of the same programs and services will be offered through this center. The Baptism Preparation Program developed by the Center was used by St. Luke’s parishioners Eric and Rachel Manley for the August 11 Baptism Preparation for St. Luke’s.
Friday afternoon, I met with Bishop Pates and the Executive Committee for the Presbyteral Council for the last time. My term on the Council ends with the August 21st meeting. That evening and Saturday 2:00 pm at OLIH I was the celebrant for the wedding of Amanda Jones and Scott Swenson. Amanda’s family is from St. Luke’s. It was a very nice celebration of God’s love in the sacrament of matrimony.
This Sunday, August 12, I had the privilege of celebrating the baptism of Josie Victoria Staebell, daughter of Scott and Heather at our 9:00 am Mass. She was wonderful and did not even make any noise when the water woke her from her nap. Welcome Josie!
You still have an opportunity to join over 70 St. Luke’s parishioners and potential parishioners at the Saturday, August 25, 9:30-11:30 am Facilities Planning Workshop at Ashland Ridge Elementary School, 2600 NW Ash Drive. Call Jenifer at the office or go to the “Dreams Go Here” button on the web site to let us know that you want to come. It is a historic moment for St. Luke’s future and our hopes and dreams for our parish development. Come and be part of what will develop.
