Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
I realize how God blesses us this Sunday morning as I write this letter. During the day yesterday and in the night, the blessing of rain has come to our part of Iowa - slow, steady with a good chance to soak into the parched earth.
On Tuesday of last week, I served as chairperson for the Presbyteral Council meeting at the Catholic Pastoral Center for the last time. My term is up and another set of priests are serving on this council. I have enjoyed being an advisory and support council to the bishop and a forum for the priests of the diocese.
That evening, Tom Chapman from the Iowa Catholic Conference shared with us about “Faithful Citizenship” the USCCB document helping us look at the teaching of the church as we approach our right to vote.
On Wednesday, I met with the Ankeny Ministerial Association for their monthly meeting at St. Anne’s. Those who gathered shared lunch and things that are happening in the various church of interest to the wider community. That evening I had the privilege of having dinner with Travis and Katie Funseth, as well as blessing their home.
Still later that evening, the Strategic Planning Team met to make last minute preparations for the Facilities Planning Workshop on August 25.
Thursday evening, Matt Halbach, the new director of the St. Joseph’s Education Center hosted a meeting at OLIH for area Adult Formation people from the various parishes. He also had a presentation on the “New Evangelization.”
On Saturday Morning, the Facilities Planning Workshop was held at Ashland Ridge with our architect team. Some 90 people came to share their ideas and dreams. People were grouped around 10 tables each with a different aspect of what we hope to be part of our St. Luke’s Facilities. The various tables shared their ideas - a great many in number! After that we were invited by a different grouping at tables to select 5 topics as “Immediate,” “Deferred” or “Long Range.” These ideas and priorities will be gathered and shared as soon as possible.
All are invited to come to the next “Site” planning workshop that will be held on Saturday, October 6, 9:30-11:30 am. You can sign up after mass or on the web site. There will be a workshop for children as well.
Sunday morning the Bike/Run/Walk was held starting from St. Luke’s building site and going to OLIH. I rode my bike out arriving about 7:00 am for the 7:30 am event. Lots of folks participated in our very bright neon yellow shirts. Thanks to all for your support and for joining the event. It was humid but there was no rain - nice temperature for the Bike/Run/Walk. Special thanks for those who helped plan, register folks and set up out at St. Luke’s that morning.
Keep Msgr. Joe McDonnell from St. Pius in your prayers. He is a long time good friend who has inoperable cancer. May the healing power of the Lord touch his life and restore him to his life and ministry.
