Father Larry's Letters

"Father Larry's Letters" are a weekly letter/journal about the many events occurring within and around the St. Luke's community.

The Advent Journey’s Fast Pace

Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,

As I write this letter, we are moving toward 50 degrees in December with promise of more of the same. I have to admit that I like it!

Early Saturday morning 11/29, my two little toes found the bathroom door frame! I thought for sure I had broken them. But after a visit to my new doctor, they are just bruised and battered.

Tuesday 12/1 we held our twice a month Staff meeting to look at schedules and tasks. Later that day, I visited the Kindergarten and they told me a lot about the patron saint of their room St. Katharine Drexel. They knew a lot. We then talked about Advent and about the children’s story of the 10 commandments. The young students are sharp!

That evening I went to the visitation and rosary for Jennie Ervine, mother of Pat Brady from St. Luke’s. 94 year old Jennie was the 1st funeral in our new facilities. Thanks to all who helped with the mass and the lunch on Wednesday. In the evening, we held a Facilities Sub-committee meeting to talk about service contracts and scheduling when service will be needed.

Thursday morning, I went to the Dowling Catholic High School Christmas luncheon. Several student performances enhanced the good food for this annual event. I left in time to visit my dentist for my regular check-up and then went to OLIH for the blood drive. That evening after Adoration, the Liturgy Committee held its regular meeting. We talked about things for Advent and for the Jubilee of Mercy year.

Friday we celebrated the School Mass and then I went right down for the 1st Friday Mass at Vintage Hills. In the afternoon, I made a hospital visit to see a new baby. In the evening, I attended the “No Room in the Inn” gathering at the Catholic Pastoral Center. It is a great evening to help raise funds for the St. Joseph’s Emergency Family Shelter. Nice food, silent auction items and Nativity Set displays.

Saturday I enjoyed the baptism of Logan Matthew Nosbisch at the 4:30 pm mass and Sunday the baptism of Max Joseph Meier at the 9:00 am mass. That afternoon, St. Luke’s Advent Penance service was celebrated at 3:00 pm.

I encourage those who have not yet attended an Advent Penance Service to consider OLIH’s service at 3:00 pm 12/13. We have confessions on Saturday mornings 9 - 10:00 am. I will be available on Monday evening 12/21 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm as well. Take advantage of this wonderful peace giving sacrament of forgiveness.

Last week, I listed the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. You can select one of them and do a little family discussion about it. Put together a plan on how you will do what that work of mercy suggests.

Again, welcome to Patsy Carlson who will begin her ministry as Faith Formation Director here at St. Luke’s on January 10. May the Lord bless our efforts as families and as a parish to pass on the gift of Faith.
