Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
Today, July in Iowa is at hand - Hot, in the upper 90’s and humid. It is a good day to stay in with the air conditioning and look outside. It is great for the corn - it will tassel out nicely.
This last week was pretty quiet. Sunday July 5, everyone was still enjoying the Independence Day weekend. I managed to do as little as possible too. Monday 7/6 was cool and rainy. I finished up a book that I was reading and in the evening followed the Tour de France bike race. The riders there must be incredible athletes to do all that riding day after day and up such steep inclines.
Tuesday July 7, we had our 2nd Staff meeting since we have moved into our new facilities. We shared our schedules and when we would be taking summer time off as well as other meeting schedules. The business of the staff will rapidly develop over the next weeks and months. Keep us in your prayers.
Wednesday July 8th after mass and a short time in the office, I went out to Panama to meet with my brother Joe. We stopped at the bank to get things arranged for us to be executors for our mother’s estate. We met with some other family members for lunch and then reviewed preparations for selling my mother’s home.
Thursday July 9th, the St. Luke’s staff took me to lunch at the Olive Garden. Great food and great company! Thanks to all of you. That evening after the 5:30 pm mass and 6 - 7:00 pm Eucharistic Adoration, the Parish Pastoral Council held its regular meeting. We discussed chapter 6 of “Forming Intentional Disciples.” A good discussion followed. We then looked at Facilities use policies from other parishes and a draft of one for St. Luke’s. Several further suggestions were made and a further draft is being readied for the 7/16 Finance Council input. Council members agreed to visit with parishioners to encourage them to consider being part of the Council come this September. They are also looking for at least two leaders for the Annual Feast of St. Luke’s Pasta Dinner and Silent Auction to be held on Sunday October 18. Let me know if you are interested in either of these.
Friday I had another birthday lunch - it is a birthday week! That evening, I had a house blessing at Jim and Pam Iosbaker’s new home. Many of their supper club came for the blessing and food to follow.
Saturday July 11, after Reconciliation, I went down to the Summerfest Parade. After a little rain delay, it went on without much difficulty. Unfortunately, I missed the “Magic School Bus” entry for St. Luke’s School which must have been in the earlier part of the parade. That evening, I enjoyed birthday greetings and song at the mass.
Sunday July 12 is my actual birthday. I enjoyed the stack of cards from the previous few days, the nice greetings from Paul Moritz on behalf of the parish at mass and your sung greetings. It was my privilege to baptize Kaylee Marie Soetmellk and Savannah Claire Gogerty at our mass. Welcome Kaylee and Savannah as the newest members of our community.
I do encourage everyone to consider signing up for our Liturgical ministries. We have need for all the things people do during our masses. We have special need of mass Servers and folks for Coffee and Donuts on Sunday.
Some parishioners have stepped forward for our Buildings and Grounds committee. We need a few more. The same is true with forming our RCIA team. If you are interested in helping with either of these, let me know.
I will be taking this week off from July 19-25. I will be visiting in Omaha and Kansas City. May all traveling families be safe on their journeys.
Fr. Larry Hoffmann
