Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
July in Iowa is living up to its reputation: hot, humid, rain - great for the corn - difficult for RAGBRAI riders! I am sure it is not anything different from other years for that rolling fair across the state of Iowa.
Last Sunday, I enjoyed a birthday dinner with some friends and cousins our in Missouri Valley after the morning mass. It is great to maintain relationships from the mid 1980’s.
Tuesday 7/14, I met with a couple planning a June 2016 wedding. It is great to see young people preparing for their marriage and then becoming part of our community. Later that evening, the Welcome Team met for their regular meeting. They will be inviting newly registered families to meet at coffee and donuts with the Team to get to know other parish families beginning August 2nd.
Wednesday morning, several parishioners met with Liz Hall, one of the organizers from AMOS. She told us about the advantage of using the “One-on-One” interview method to create a relationship style in the parish. It is a good way to identify an individual’s interest and how to point them to a like parish interest. We will be holding a training session for this method come September.
Thursday I was scheduled for the Blood Drive at OLIH, but my summer cold kept me from donating. After the 5:30 pm Mass, the Liturgical Furnishings sub committee held its meeting. There are a few remaining projects to complete including the main crucifix, statues of Mary and Joseph, shelves for the Holy Oils and kneelers for the Reconciliation Room. After this meeting, the Finance Council held its regular meeting. We welcomed Aaron Shell as the newest member of the Council. We reviewed the financial statements for the initial year end report. We received a report from Dick Johnson about the current cost for the construction. A year end report will be developed to present to the whole parish in the near future.
Friday 7/17, I met with Mike Gatzke our Web site master, to review the various things on the site. We found a good number in need of updating, some of which we were able to do right there. Others have to have revisions forwarded to him. You are encouraged to go to the web site - click on the parish “Facebook” icon. There is lots of parish information there. There is a parish “Twitter” and the next icon is “Flickr”? It is a site that has all the photos from parish events. It is loaded with all kinds of pictures of the many activities of the parish. That evening, I enjoyed I-Cubs baseball with the Eatons even though it was hot, hot. When the sun went down, it was much better.
Saturday 7/18, I was packing for my vacation and getting last minute things put together.
By the time you read this letter, the gym floor should be completed. They were to pour the top coats beginning Monday 7/20. After it is finished, we are to stay off of it for a full week. So we will likely have coffee and donuts again today in the gathering space.
Several have indicated interest in being part of our Buildings and Grounds committee. If any others are interested, please let me know. If any of you are interested in finding out more about becoming Catholic or if you know someone who is, please let me know. We are beginning to form our own RCIA team for St. Luke’s for sessions to begin in September. If you have interest in being on the team, let me know as well.
May Lord’s blessing be yours as we continue to make St. Luke’s our home.
Fr. Larry Hoffmann
