Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
After a nice rain during the week, lots of flowering trees are in full bloom, lawn mowers are running and there is talk of gardening. Spring is really here!
On Sunday afternoon and Monday evening, the 1st Communion class and parents attended a nice workshop to help them pray and do hands-on things in preparation for their May 1st Eucharist. Keep them in your prayers as they celebrate at a special 11:00 am Mass.
On Tuesday 4/19 after our Staff meeting, I met with my priest’s support group at Christ the King Church. It is great to have fellow priests to pray with you and share their insights into life. That evening, the AMOS (A Metro Organizing Strategy) board met at St. Luke’s for their quarterly budget meeting. As a member of their board, it helps me keep up with their organizing activities.
Wednesday morning, I went to Hope Lutheran Church for a meeting to help understand Alpha, a process to help us look at the fundamentals of being a believer in Christ. It was helpful to get an idea of how such a process might work in a parish. That evening, we had practice for Confirmation. There was a few minutes to meet with the Facilities Committee before we had a “Teaching Mass” for the 6-9th RE students. We welcomed Kim Mandelkow from the Diocesan Office of Worship who provided the teaching commentary.
Thursday I had annual x-rays at my chiropractor and later, my annual physical. I am still in one piece! That evening after the 5:30 pm mass, the Faith Formation Council held its regular meeting. A review of the April 2nd Visioning retreat results was held. Many Faith Formation ideas including “The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd” were discussed. Further plans for the coming year began to emerge.
Friday morning I visited with the St. Luke’s School 1st Communion class. They had lots of good questions. At Noon, I joined my Tribunal Panel at the Catholic Pastoral Center. Mid-afternoon, I attended the wedding rehearsal for Heather Schilmoeller and Scott Hughes at St. Ambrose. Heather is the daughter of Tom and Rhonda from St. Luke’s. The next day, I was the celebrant for their wedding mass at 1:00 pm.
Saturday evening, Madeline Christine Burns, daughter of Jason and Emily was baptized at the 4:30 pm mass. After Mass, the Welcome committee held a nice gathering for our recently registered members in the gym. Following those nice appetizers, I joined the St. Luke’s Primetimers for dinner at the Latin King. It was Prom time, with lots of young people at dinner before their evening’s festivities.
Sunday at 9:00 am, Bishop Pates came to St. Luke’s for Confirmation at our morning mass. This was the first Confirmation class at our new church and the bishop made them all feel special. Thank you Bishop Pates!
We are still making progress on our “INCREASED OFFERTORY APPEAL.” As of 4/24, 80 families have responded with an average of $12.49 per family and a total of $986.75 for each week. I ask every family to respond to my letters and move us closer to 100% participation.
May the joy of risen Jesus continue to fill your lives as new life opens all around us.
Fr. Larry Hoffmann
