Dear St. Luke’s Parishioners,
As I write this letter on Memorial Day weekend, the sun is glorious. We have a taste of summer today after some rainy days. We remember all those who died in service of their country and ask God’s blessings on their families.
This week for the summer, we begin the bulletin every other week. Last Sunday 5/22 the Bike Walk Run was held. About 300 people participated not counting the volunteers. It was a beautiful day with a southeast wind pushing us along until the last 1/2 mile. The $12,000+ raised is a great boost the make the playground 1st phase possible very soon. Thank you to all who participated and to the great volunteers who worked so hard to make it successful.
Monday 5/23, I attended the funeral for Fr. Jim Kiernan at St. Ambrose. Keep him in your prayers. That evening, the Knights of Columbus held their regular monthly meeting.
Tuesday 5/24, my priest’s support group met at St. Anthony’s for our monthly meeting. It is great to have brother priests to pray with and to share moments in the priesthood. That evening the regular St. Luke’s School Board met. We reviewed the approved budget and began the planning for the next school year including preparing for two new classrooms.
On Wednesday, the Ankeny Ministerial Association met at Old Chicago for their regular meeting. We planned for the next year and discussed what kinds of things we would make part of our work together. That evening, I visited “the Dorothy House” in Des Moines. It is a house that helps with the recovery process for young women who have been victims of human trafficking right here in our metro area.
On Thursday, I met with the area priests for our “Pastors’ Lunch.” It is a good way to share what is happening in our parishes and to discuss how we can help each other. That evening, the Social Concerns committee met. We continued our discussion of Pope Francis’ encyclical “On Care For Our Common Home.” We discussed plans for our part of the Habitat Build in mid June and in Mid August. It includes preparing lunches for 25 and has space for 10 workers for each of the build days. Check at the office if you can help.
Friday after the 8:30 am School Mass, the last 1/2 day of school for St. Luke’s School was held. The students enjoyed videos of pictures taken throughout the year. Awards were given in the classes and happy students went home for lunch finished with the 1st very successful year at St. Luke’s Catholic School. Thank you Mrs. Eaton and all the teachers and helpers for all you have done this year to make it a success.
Saturday at the 4:30 pm mass, Deacon Rick Neidergeses baptized his two grandchildren: Frances Leigh Neidergeses and Lucius Wesley Pohlman. Congratulations to both families.
The priests of the diocese will be at our Annual Priests Retreat from Sunday June 5 - Noon Thursday June 9th. Please keep us all in your prayers. Don’t forget the visit to the Holy Door on Saturday June 11, 11:00 at The Basilica of St. John. We can meet at St. Luke’s at 10:15 am to share rides. The next day Sunday June 12, plan on coming to the Parish Picnic at Big Creek beginning at noon. May the Lord bless us with a sunny day!
