Mass Intentions at St. Luke the Evangelist

Mass intentions refer to the particular purpose for which a specific Mass is offered. Typically, and the most common, is for the repose of the soul of someone who has died. Here on earth, we can pray for the souls in Purgatory. One way is to request that your parish offer a Mass for the intention of a specific loved one. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul. Please keep in mind that the tradition of offering Masses for others, particularly the dead, originates in the very early Church. When we face the death of someone, even a person who is not Catholic, to have a Mass offered for the repose of his/her soul and to offer our prayers can be more beneficial and comforting than any other sympathy card or bouquet of flowers. Most importantly, we should always remember our own dearly departed loved ones in the Holy Mass and through our own prayers and sacrifices to help in their gaining eternal rest.

Traditionally, there is one intention allowed per Mass Intention requests. This means a single person, a deceased man and woman (a mother and father), a deceased son or/and daughter, a family, etc. One Mass each Sunday is required to be for the People of the Parish.

For special situations Mass may be said for a living person. They are called “for the intention of” instead of a Mass intention. This could be a 50th wedding anniversary, a priest’s ordination anniversary, 100th birthday, etc. If you are unsure you can always ask Father Ken.

Week-end Masses are not always available as they fill up quickly. The office cannot move people that are already on the list. Week-day Masses are easier to get and will still be noted in the bulletin and said at the Mass.

Mass Intentions are made at the Parish Office. It is easier to make them in person but can also be called into the office.

For the sake of all who would like to have a Mass intention, they will be limited to 2 weekend Mass per month per person, unless there is still is an opening the week before. Mass intentions should be varied by day to make it fair for all families.

When making Mass intentions indicate to the office if it is for a deceased person or a special intention of situation.
